The History of Elmo

Elmo is a Muppet from the television show Sesame Street. He is a fuzzy, furry, red monster that has very large eyes and a bright orange nose. He has his own segment on the show called Elmo’s World which shares his segment with his friends, a goldfish named Dorothy and a silent friend named Mr. Noodle.

Elmo is a three and a half year old puppet that uses third person instead of first person to speak about him. His first appearance on the show was in 1972 as Baby Monster and then on November 18, 1972 when he was introduced as Elmo. Since those early appearances Elmo has gained in popularity and also has starred in full length motion pictures.

In addition to the on screen popularity, Elmo also has a line of toys that are in his likeness. In fact, in 1996 it was such a must have item for the Christmas season that most toy stores ran out of Tickle Me Elmo as soon as they came into their store.

Since then, other toys have followed suit. There have been the Hokey Pokey Elmo, Let’s Pretend Elmo, Chicken Dance Elmo, Elmo Knows Your Name (which comes with a CD for parents to program Elmo to say your child’s name and other select phrases) and of course who could forget the TMX Elmo?

Elmo has been used as a tool by parents to help explain difficult situations to their children. There are also other parents that use Elmo toys to calm fears and uneasiness of starting school or other unknown situations their children are facing.
